Can your DIY home security system be hacked?

Updated: Jul 19

Can your home alarm system be hacked? The difference between DIY alarm equipment and monitored home security.

If you have just purchased a home, property, or you are just now deciding to invest in home security, then you know how important it is to research the many companies in the industry. There are many options for alarm systems and camera equipment in the marketplace, there are ways to self monitor your home, and there are many monitoring service providers. If you are going to be making that important investment in your home, it is essential that you are aware of who you may be doing business with. The reason some DIY home security plans, or cheaper monitoring companies, have those lower rates and cheaper product is because they usually are not the cutting edge technology that effectively secures the home. The low quality of the door and window sensors put your entire system at risk to being jammed or hacked.

In recent tests, Consumer Reports found that five popular DIY home security systems are susceptible to jamming. This means that burglars could potentially block signals from door/window or motion sensors, allowing them to enter a home undetected. Although any wireless device can be jammed, some systems are more resistant than others.

The systems found to be vulnerable include Abode Iota All-In-One Kit, Cove Home Security System, Eufy 5-Piece Home Alarm Kit, Ring Alarm Security Kit (2nd gen.), and SimpliSafe The Essentials SS3-01. Two of these systems, Cove and Eufy, are also susceptible to replay disarm signal attacks, a more complex form of attack where a hacker records and replays a disarm signal from a keyfob.

Luckily for customers of Palmetto Alarm, these hacking methods are not possible with any of the equipment we use. While it is unlikely that most criminals have the knowledge or ability to break into your home using these methods, it is important to be aware that it exists and to mitigate as much risk as possible when investing in home security. When it comes to the value of your life, all of your belongings and your loved ones, we encourage everyone not to leave your home's security up to the lowest bidder. Our monitoring services may not be the cheapest but there is a good reason for that.

The difference in our equipment, and the equipment of some of our other competitors, makes a difference when cheaper equipment has those faults that can result in the entire system being disabled. All of the wireless equipment we use is dual-path encrypted, which simply means the signal that is sent, via radio wave, from the panel, to your door or window contacts, that path is never repeated. This encryption renders these jamming devices incapable of disrupting these signals from your unit to all of the other devices in the home.

The Honeywell security panel we use has a built in Verizon cell, that communicates through cellular towers, this is also far superior to other companies that utilize power through the home's internet or home phoneline. If a phoneline were to be cut from the outside of the home, that would leave the home at risk, and if the wifi goes out in a storm, your home is again at risk.

All of these safety concerns are kept in mind when designing our security services. Our company has many highly experienced security professionals that have done all the research so you don't have to. You can trust that with Palmetto Alarm we will never sacrifice quality or efficiency from your security system in order to save on costs. We will always offer the best product and equipment for our clients.
